“WHEN DARKNESS COMES”

“WHEN DARKNESS COMES”

When darkness seems pervasive
… darkness of the future, the pandemic, the protests, the potential looming war in Europe, the climate change, the medical diagnosis, the bills that cannot be paid …

When darkness comes and fear of the unknown reigns
When pain persists and fear of the unknown rules
When sleepless nights are commonplace and fear of the unknown dominates

May friends and strangers pray and help us rise from the darkness
for one more moment
one more hour
one more day.

When darkness comes
When pain persists
When sleepless nights are commonplace
may we concentrate on the love that surrounds
may we concentrate on the hope that sustains
may we concentrate on the healing that is coming
as friends, family, doctors, nurses do what they can
with their loving thoughts, prayers, professional care, kind actions
to help us rise from the darkness
for one more moment
one more hour
one more day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An aside: This prayer can be used by individuals by substituting “we and us” for “I and me.”
“THE WELL WITHIN”
“THE WELL WITHIN”
A gentle leader and humble man, Thich Nhat Hanh, died this day, January 21, 2022.
Born in 1926, he became a Buddhist monk when he was only sixteen. Working tirelessly for reconciliation between North and South Vietnam, his lifelong efforts to generate peace moved Martin Luther King Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Living in exile in France where he founded a retreat centre, Hahn became a prolific writer, renowned scholar, world leader and spiritual guide, championing a movement that weaves traditional meditative practices with nonviolent civil disobedience. His teachings revolved around … respect for life … generosity … loving communication … and cultivation of a healthy lifestyle; his Mindfulness meditation technique helped people in their desire for wholeness and inner calm for generations.
Often quoted, one of Hanh’s phrases particularly spoke to me as I was writing the ‘Soulistry – Artistry of the Soul: Creative Ways to Nurture Your Spirituality’ book. That phrase become one of the quotations in the book – a book which puts forth “Soul Questions” for readers to reflect upon and consider their purpose in life and reason for living. To learn more about the ‘Soulistry’ book and read some reviews, you are welcome to click: www.soulistry.com/books
In thanksgiving for the life of Thich Nhat Hanh and in thankfulness for his permission to use his quote in the ‘Soulistry – Artistry of the Soul’ book, I share Hanh’s words and the Soul-Questions based on his quote for your personal reflection … in your thoughts; in your journal; in discussion with a friend, spiritual guide, soul friend, religious leader,
THE WELL WITHIN Thich Nhat Hanh
(“Soulistry-Artistry of the Soul”, page 11)
“The well is within us. If we dig deeply in the present moment, the water will spring forth.”
Soulistry Soul-Questions:
* What do you think the author means by “the well is within”?
* How have you dug “deeply in the present moment” in your life?
* What growth/learning/self-discoveries resulted from such reflection?
* How might you begin to “dig deeply in the present moment”?
* Are there things in your past or evident in this present time that are preventing you from looking at “the well within” you? If so, name/journal/talking them over with a counselor, spiritual director, soul friend, religious leader so that these things no longer have power over you, restricting your ongoing tapping of the well-within.
* What “water” do you hope “will spring forth” from such self-examination?
Thank you, Thich Nhat Hanh for your gentle leadership, for you faithfulness to the call you heard, and for your wisdom. May you rest in peace now for all eternity.
“IT’S A MMMMM Morning”
“IT’S A MMMMM Morning”
This morning was an “M” morning … a Magical … Mystical … Mysterious … Marvellous … Memory-Making … Morning!
As I entered the roundabout, the sight before me was so lovely that I drove all the way around the roundabout, parked in the school’s parking lot across the street, and snapped this photo to remember what had captured my attention.
And then, within minutes, the fog had lifted and the beauty of the moment was gone.
But not forever, thanks to my little camera and the availability of the school parking lot.
And thanks to the gift of memory, the photo will continue to remind me for years to come of an MMMMM.
In the midst of a pandemic, where mask-wearing, social-distancing, curtailed family and friend visits/activities are commonplace, it’s not always easy to recognize the MMMMM … magical, mystical, mysterious, marvellous, memory-making moments before and around us.
But they’re there
in the fog
in the twinkling and smiling eyes of another
in the “may you stay safe”
in the beauty of the world
in the giggle of a child
in the wag of a tail and the cuddle of a feline
in the daffodil trying to surface
in the breath of fresh air
in the first step of the morning
in the comfort of a steaming cup of tea
in the warmth of bed
in the …
Hope your morning, afternoon, evening, day
for whatever reason, is (was) lovely
… MMMMM
Magical … Mystical … Mysterious … Marvellous … Memory-Making!
“THE ALPHABET OF LIFE”
“THE ALPHABET OF LIFE”
The month of January is two weeks old today.  The new year has begun and the door is open to the future.
What does the future hold for us … as individuals? family members?  community members?  society in general?  religious organization? country?  world?
Perhaps this Alphabet of Life can give guidance if each letter of the alphabet is a gentle reminder of how we can be good-to-ourselves … aka “love ourself” and in doing so, contribute in positive ways to wellness in our families, communities, society in general, religious organization, country, world?
A
Accepting of self
B
Be-ing, not do-ing
C
Creating something each day
D
Drawing on our inner resources
E
Elevating our thoughts to new heights
F
Feeding our soul
G
Graciously accepting compliments
H
Hitting goals
I
Initiating contact with a friend
J
Joyfully receiving the gift of life
K
Keeping our head while the world seems out-of-whack
L
Loving our neighbour as ourself
M
Mirroring the goodness we admire in others
N
Nourishing our spirit
O
Opening our heart to receiving love in new ways
P
Paddling through each day in spite of the blocks
Q
Questioning the imponderables
R
Realizing our potential
S
Smiling when we meet a stranger
T
Treasuring the precious moments of each day
U
Understanding that we don’t have all the answers to life
V
Valuing our education and those who have been/ are our mentors
W
Weaving experiences of life through a loom of learning
X
Xtracting information from the Universe so we grow in wisdom
Y
Yielding to the holy, however we understand that term
Z
Zeroing in on the truly important things of life
I had fun creating this little alphabet sampler in the photograph as it gave me an opportunity to play with some new art tools and techniques and consider phrases to go with the letters of the alphabet (okay, “x” was a stretch <g>).
Here we are – in the middle of the Season of Advent.
Advent greetings to all, whether you follow the Season or not … welcome ritual … find Light in creativity, family, friendship, respect, integrity.
As I worked on making this Advent card, I prayed that peace, hope, joy and love would permeate infill, inspire and encourage our hurting world and its inhabitants. And, I prayed for all those who follow and support the ‘Soulistry’ ministry, including this blog and the various Facebook groups under the ‘Soulistry’ umbrella – with deep gratitude.
May this Season of Advent bring an unexpected blessing to all.
May we have healthy eyes to see the blessing,
healthy ears to hear the blessing,
healthy hands to touch the blessing,
healthy legs to walk towards the blessing,
and a healthy heart to recognize and receive the blessing.
“SPIRIT OF GENTLENESS”
“SPIRIT OF GENTLENESS”
A young man was declared “Not Guilty” in a U.S. court yesterday, in spite of the fact that last year, when he was 17, he carried a rifle into a crowd, shot and injured one man and killed two others.
There are some who believe the Judge was wrong when he threw out the ‘possession of a dangerous weapon by a minor’ charge; that if the defendant had been any race other than Caucasian, he would have been found ‘Guilty’; that the defendant should not have been involved in picking names for the jury who would try his case; that the Prosecution was incompetent.
But at the end, it was up to the members of the jury. At the conclusion of the trial, they believed that the accused was “Not Guilty.” He is now free and can never be tried for this crime again.
Declared “Not Guilty.”
Does ‘Not Guilty’ mean ‘Innocent’?
Conversely, does ‘Innocent’ mean ‘Not Guilty’?
Two men are dead because a young man killed them with a rifle he never should have been given … let alone carried into the crowd that night … let alone used.
Anger escalates. And fear. And hatred
… surfacing in social media, daily conversations
darkening thoughts and words and possibly more actions.
Something has to be done so that hope can enter, fear can lighten, hatred can begin to dissipate, and the slippery slope can straighten out.
Where to begin?
Surely it begins with each of us
Register our outrage? Yes.
“Name” our fears? Yes.
Recognize and acknowledge our own prejudices and biases? Yes
And do what we can to bring about a Spirit of Gentleness into the world around us
… and not just around us
… but within us.
Time will tell … if Civil charges are brought.
Time will tell … if the slippery slope that the United States is on will result in civil war – or even the ending of democracy in that country.
Time will tell.
And in that time,
may there be moments of gentleness
may we be gentle
– gentle with ourselves
– gentle with our children … partners … other family members … neighbours … tradespeople … store clerks … gas station attendees … medical professionals …
May a Spirit of Gentleness flow through hallways, homes, offices, classrooms, social media, governments … in me … in you … in us all.
“NORTHERN LIGHTS – BEAUTIFUL SKIES”
“NORTHERN LIGHTS – BEAUTIFUL SKIES”
Last night, the Aurora Borealis was expected to make an appearance in this part of the world. News told us that might even see them from our own back yard. I was excited! I’ve only seen the Northern Lights once and that was long ago in the Okanagan of British Columbia while camping. It was such an incredible experience that night! I woke my son so he could see the magnificence of the colours streaming across the sky. Last night, I waited – and waited – and waited.
But, in spite of a clear sky, no rain and news media postulating such a sighting might be possible, no Northern Lights. I even set the alarm to get up and see them!
Long ago, while doing consulting work in Alaska, my Alaska friend, Scott, took me out to a field, far away from any lights for several nights. Each night we waited and waited and waited in his truck for the Northern Lights to appear. He kept telling me they were magnificent – stunning! – and often appeared there. Nope. Not one sighting. Any night.
When I got home, there was a message from Scott … the night I left, the Northern Lights appeared and “they were incredible!” One more night – if I had just delayed my flight home one more night – but, I didn’t and have been dreaming of seeing them again one day. Last night, I came sooooo close.
While I may never see the Northern Lights in person, those nights sitting out in the Alaska field with Scott, waiting for the Northern Lights to make an appearance, and last night waiting at home, offered opportunities to pray for and think about the environment – and play.
Photos I’ve seen of the Northern Lights show them as multi-coloured, but I decided to play only with blues and purples, just for the fun of it. Some day, I hope I get to see the Northern Lights in person again, but in the meantime, I’ll continue to dabble in watercolour, enjoy Scott’s Facebook photos of the Northern Lights that regularly appear in his part of the world, and reflect on the environment and my role in keeping it healthy.
Shine on, beautiful skies above this world! May you be a reminder to all human beings of the role we play in the existence of a healthy world of clean air. And may those beautiful skies bring solace and hope where grieving, fragmentation and fear about the future of this world prevail.
“WHEN WE DIE …”
“WHEN WE DIE …”
Oh, Rabbit and Bear … you are quite the team!
To have this pop up in my Facebook newsfeed today, October 17th, of all days (it would have been our 12th wedding anniversary) well, you both said it all.
When my husband Hans died 5 1/2 years ago, a part of me died too. But knowing what the future would have been like for him (skin cancer, then colon cancer, then esophogeal cancer diagnoses) and seeing him literally waste away, be unable to eat, live in constant pain, be unable to speak and knowing it would only get worse, as difficult as it was to accept, there was a deep sense of gratitude that his suffering was over and an inexplicable awareness that finally, he was at peace and that we would be “together forever” some day.
Thank you, Rabbit and Bear and especially Canadian artist Tara Shannon who created this lovely image.
When we die …. ahhh. When each of us dies, may we go into the hearts of those who have loved us so that “we’re together, forever.”
“SHARE SOME LOVE”
“SHARE SOME LOVE”
Little rock and stones I’ve found on local beaches have become transformed into what I’ve been calling Kindness Rocks … as in the act of kindness rocks … and also these are Kindness Rocks.
After painting the rocks, words/phrases/images/colour were added and then the rocks were hidden outdoors in the hope  in the brief moment of discovery, finders will experience a gentle momentary respite from worry, fear …  whatever is robbing them of smiling, enjoying the moment, celebrating life, sharing love.
Have I had fun making these? You bet! And I’ve been having fun hiding them and giving them away, too.
By the way, while there are no design “rules” for the Kindness Rocks, recently I seem to be focused on a theme: love … hearts.
The hope of the latest Kindness Rocks is that finders would share some love … hide the rock for someone else to find … do an unexpected kind deed for someone … tell someone how they are important in your life … smile at a stranger … wear a mask … get vaccinated.
Let’s share some love.   💞    💓    💕
“Be a KISSer-Apache Blessing”
“Be a KISSer-Apache Blessing”
I admit it, I’m a KISSer
… KISS philosopher … KISS theologian … KISS human being
a believer in living an approach to life reflective of “Keep It Simple, Sweetheart.”
The Apache Blessing’ resonates with my spirit:
“May the sun
… bring new energy by day.
May the moon
… softly restore by night.
May the rain
… wash away worries.
May the breeze
… blow new strength into your being.
And may you walk gently through the world
and know its beauty all the days of your life.”
The Blessing was supposedly written in 1947 by Elliott Arnold in his Western novel ‘Blood Brother’ and popularized by the 1950 adaptation of the novel in ‘Broken Arrow,’ a movie by screenwriter Albert Maltz.   Whatever its original source, I love its simplicity and message.
May the simple gifts of sun, moon, rain and wind bless us
in ways we cannot ask or imagine
in terms of peace, hope, healing and goodness.
“WELCOME NEW MONTH!”
“WELCOME NEW MONTH!”
It’s the beginning of a new month.
Mmmmmm, what new challenges will be placed before me?
What new friends will I encounter?
Where will this month lead my creative soul?
How will I respond to the “still, small Voice within”?
What learning will there be if I
… respond
… face the challenges
… listen to that Voice within
… consider possibilities
What learning will there be if I
… don’t respond
… don’t face the challenges
… don’t listen to that Voice
… don’t consider possibilities
and see only problems?
Problems.
There will always be problems
of some sort or another.
Possibilities.
May possibilities surface!
Welcome new month!
“MS. SQUIRREL CAME FOR A VISIT”
“MS. SQUIRREL CAME FOR A VISIT”
As I looked through the patio door, I saw her.
Ms. Squirrel.
She was eating the seed I’d put out for the birds.
I grabbed my purse and muttered
“I see you!  Those seeds are *not* yours! They’re for the birds.  Your food is over there.”
Did she listen to me?
Of course not.
She was on a mission.
She needed to find food to store for the winter.
So Ms. Squirrel stuffed seeds into her cheek pouches
and stuffed some more and more and more quickly.
Very quickly.
As I quietly inched my way closer to the patio door to take her photo
she stopped
looked up
waited.
I stopped moving.
Not sensing danger,
Ms. Squirrel began to stuff her pouches
with more and more and more and more quickly.
Very quickly.
I inched forward a bit more, camera poised.
Ms Squirrel stopped, looked up.  Waited.
I stopped moving.
We danced this dance for a minute or two
and before she darted away
I took her photo.
Today, Ms. Squirrel came for a visit.
She stuffed her cheek pouches
and brought a huge smile to my face.
She also brought a reminder
‘winter is coming’ and
many will be hungry.
Not just squirrels or birds.
Our local Food Banks will need us.
Thank you for your visit, today, Ms. Squirrel
and your gentle reminder.
“EVEN IN THE MIDST”
“EVEN IN THE MIDST”
It rained yesterday.
Oh how it rained and rained and rained.
We really needed it!
And this lovely rose from the garden raised its sweet head, welcomed the raindrops and smiled, blessing me with its beauty, its colour, its sweet scent.
A gentle reminder from the Universe that even in the midst of rainy/difficult times, there is beauty.
May I always look for the beauty and be given the grace to see it.
“One At A Time”
“One At A Time”
We can’t change the minds of all who are opposed to getting vaccinated or think the pandemic is a hoax, but maybe the following will give encouragement and be a reminder that love shared with one another can impact the hearts of family and friends … one at a time.
This is a true story shared by a friend. Though the actual conversation wasn’t recorded, it’s close to what transpired and the outcome actually happened.
He said “I want to come and visit. I miss my family! How about I come next weekend?”
She replied “We’d love to see you. But, you know that we are vaccinated, have an eight year old who cannot be vaccinated. Mom is 79 and we’ve decided no one comes into our home who isn’t fully vaccinated. Let us know when you’re fully vaccinated and we’ll find a date that works. We’re looking forward to seeing you again, too.”
He said “I don’t believe in that pandemic stuff. It’s just like the flu. I don’t need to get vaccinated.”
She replied “It’s your decision. We’d love to see you, but won’t until you are fully vaccinated.”
He said … after a long silence “Are you serious?”
She replied … “Yes.”
He said “I’m family. You don’t want to see me? What about Thanksgiving and Christmas and Mom’s 80th birthday?”
She replied “It’s your decision.”
He’d had a similar conversation with her husband, many times and continued to refuse to get vaccinated.
This time was somehow different.
Several days later, he phoned and said “Okay. I’ve made the appointment. I’m getting my first vaccination on Monday. Let’s talk about a visit at Thanksgiving.”
And that is how it can be done.
One way to change hearts and minds
… one at a time.
“PAINFUL TEARS”
“PAINFUL TEARS”
The wind blows.  Floods and rising waters continue their devastating invasion.  Smoke from nearby fires is frighteningly strong.  Lungs ache.  Eyes burn.  Breathing is compromised.  Evacuations continue.  Families fear losing their homes, livestock, pets, livelihoods, lives.  Those who survived the fires now face homelessness, poverty, an uncertain future.
Painful tears.
The wind howls.  People frantically trying to get into an airport and on a plane to safety.  People huddle together, stranded on the tarmac in the hopes that they will be able to get on a plane that will rescue them from death, rape, torture.
Painful tears.
The wind resurfaces. New strains of the pandemic virus erupt, overloading hospitals, exhausting front line workers, terrifying parents of children under the age of twelve unable to be vaccinated, causing polarization in families where some decide to be vaccinated and others decide the pandemic is a hoax.
Painful tears.
The wind changes direction.  Young men and women brought to their new country as babies or children face deportation.  Infants, toddlers, children, youth, separated from their parents continue to be incarcerated, uncared for, unprotected, terrified.
Painful tears.
The wind that has blown for decades continues to blow in new ways as unmarked graves of children in residential schools are found – as memories of childhood experiences of abuse in residential schools bubble to the surface with the discovery of the graves – as the reality of murdered and missing indigenous women continues to sink in.
Painful tears.
The wind still blows.  People are standing up, speaking out, making their opposition known, not only in peaceful ways, but in not-so-peaceful ways. Nuclear threats beg the ‘is war on the horizon?’ question. Ordinary citizens ask why the law seems to serve and protect the most powerful, but not the vulnerable, not the land, not the environment.
Painful tears.
The wind of ill-health continues to disrupt lives.  Addiction, chronic illness, mental illness, overdoses, accidents, loneliness, aging, grief, and increase rents that are impossible to meet forcing businesses to close, people out of their homes and on to the streets.  Lives, finances, health and relationships are compromised.
Painful tears.
Painful tears continue to fall from eyes, covering faces and continue to fall from hearts, covering souls as the sacrifice of those who died, so there might be life and freedom to vote and express opinions, often seems lost in rhetoric and anger.
Painful tears.
Tears. Far too many painful tears at this time of fires and floods, rape and torture, hurricanes and starvation, earthquakes and tornadoes, political lies and abuse of power.
May painful tears be diminished by naming the fears (not letting them fester, or stifle conversation) about global warming/climate change, the pandemic, bullying, abuse, political decisions … and by taking action.
Let painful tears flow
and motivate
to let in
Light.
“WELC –  WAIT!”
“WELC – WAIT!”
This is going on my front door in the morning
because if I were a parent or grandparent with young children
… or had a loved one living with me who had a compromised immune system
this is what I would want to put at my front door
And besides
… I am my own ‘loved one with a compromised immune system.’ 🙂
I welcome visitors on the deck, at the front door, out for a walk,
but not in my home at this time unless they are fully vaccinated
and even then, I’m putting a hold on that for the time being.
I don’t live in fear
I live in reality.
And the reality is that even being fully vaccinated,
not everyone is fully protected
and could be a carrier of the virus.
This virus is not only spreading, but mutating.
Trying to keep my mind off the terrible news about Afghanistan, Haiti, people dying from the heat, floods, tornadoes, fires (too close to home this night), and the overloaded hospitals due to unvaccinated people become ill with the virus, I decided to “create something.
This. And it will go on my front door in the morning after I laminate it.
And if you believe in the power of prayer, please pray for our world and in particular the people in harm’s way.
If you don’t believe in the power of prayer, please send gentle, kind, loving, positive thoughts their way.
“FLEETINGLY”
fleetingly
the years fly by
marked by flames
so many
so fast
so soon
while I ponder
and forgetfulness
and at the same time
rejoice for I am here
to see the candles
flames
“RESPECT”
“RESPECT”
Respect.
Songs have been written about it.
Parents teach their children about it.
People expect it.
But what is it – what does it involve – exactly?
How about “regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others”?
Bishop Greg Rickel (8th bishop of the Diocese of Olympia, WA), listed his “Ten Rules for Respect.”
From what I understand, he really does follow these rules.
Wouldn’t our world be a much kinder and safer place if everyone followed them
If all leaders (be they Bishops, CEO’s, politicians, office managers, store owners, parents, etc.), showed respect using Bishop Rickel’s rules, people would feel supported, encouraged, trusted.
The cycle of respect in the businesses, constituencies, congregations they serve, and families, would keep flowing.
Here are Bishop Rickel’s Ten Rules for Respect which are a model of behavior for us all in our interactions with others. All that’s needed is to put our own name in place of “Greg”.
1. If you have a problem with me, come to me (privately).
2. If I have a problem with you, I will come to you (privately).
3. If someone has a problem with me and comes to you, send them to me (I’ll do the same for you.)
4. If someone consistently will not come to me, say “Let’s go to Greg together. I am sure he will see us about this.” (I will do the same for you).
5. Be careful how you interpret me. I’d rather do that. On matters that are unclear, do not feel pressured to interpret my feelings or thoughts. It is easy to misinterpret intentions.
6. I will be careful how I interpret you.
7. If it’s confidential, don’t tell. If you or anyone comes to me in confidence, I won’t tell unless a) the person is going to harm himself/herself b) the person is going to physically harm someone else, c) a child has been physically or sexually abused. I expect the same from you.
8. I do not read unsigned letters or notes.
9. I do not manipulate; I will not be manipulated; do not let others manipulate you. Do not let others manipulate me through you. I will not preach “at you.” I will leave conviction to the Holy Spirit (she does it better anyway).
10. When in doubt, just say it. The only dumb questions are those that don’t get asked. Our relationships with one another, at the end of the day, are the most important things, so if you have a concern, pray, and then (if led), speak up. If I can answer it without misrepresenting something, someone or breaking a confidence, I will.
Thank you, Bishop Rickel
“DON’T WANT TO GET SICK?”
“DON’T WANT TO GET SICK?”
It was near the beginning of the pandemic … most people were social distancing and mask-wearing.
Standing in line outside the health food store, the woman ahead of me were social distancing and wearing masks when a fellow appeared … no social distancing … no mask and kept getting closer and closer to me. I asked him to please step back to the place marked on the ground so we could be social distancing. And that’s when it began.
“Oh, you want me to step back because of COVID19? That’s all ridiculous stuff.”
He was adamant that there was nothing to be concerned about. “Even if COVID19 is real – there’s Hydroxychloroquine.” He was belligerent. He began shouting that the tv station he watched and the medical doctor in the US who had been interviewed on one of their recent shows, had since been silenced because they were telling the truth
He shouted “Who to believe?” That was the Million Dollar Question then – and now.
“I’m not afraid” he said. “I don’t believe this COVID19 is real.”
When it was my turn to enter the store, I noticed that he entered shortly after and overheard him say “What do you have that will increase my immune system? I don’t want to get sick.”
So much for thinking COVID19 is “ridiculous stuff” and disbelieving COVID19 is real.
He doesn’t want to get sick.
He doesn’t want to die.
But, he’s not going to wear a mask.
He doesn’t observe social distancing.
But he was in a health store looking for “something” that will keep him healthy and increase his immune system.
Harumpf!
How about wearing a mask and observing social distancing, sir?
That will keep you healthy.
“LESSONS MOTHERS TEACH THEIR CHILDREN”
“LESSONS MOTHERS TEACH THEIR CHILDREN”
It was a simple, informal, unexpected conversation with the check-out gal at the local grocery store.
She was wearing an “Every Child Matters” bright orange shirt. I commented on it and said that I was sorry I wasn’t able to get to the rally on the weekend. She said she couldn’t get there either. And then she said “I’ll never forget the children and am grateful for my mom.”
I asked what, in particular, brought her that feeling of gratitude and she said … “She made us go outdoors every day and shout as loud as we could.”
Neighbours would ask the children why they were shouting and their reply was always the same “Mom told us to.”
The grocery story clerk never understood ‘why’.
She just did it.
And then she continued …
“Mom also made us run as fast as we could to the corner store and back and said she was timing us. Each time, we had to at least do it as fast as we did it the day before and try to beat our own record.”
Again, she never understood ‘why’. She just did it.
When the store clerks’s mother died, she never had the opportunity to ask her mother ‘why’ and didn’t think about either of those incidents again … until the first group of unmarked graves of Residential School children was discovered.
And then she realized … her mother was teaching her and her siblings what to do if the government came to take them to the Residential School.
Shout.
Run.
Shout.
Run.
Stories that are emerging from the students of the Residential Schools speak of children who disappeared and were never heard of again. Many of those children were quiet and didn’t run away.
Most residential children who shouted and tried to run away were punished. But they didn’t disappear.
The grocery store clerk wishes she could speak with her mother and thank her for the lessons of shouting and running. But she can’t. Her mother died.
So instead, she often wears something with the colour orange on it.
Today, it was the orange “Every Child Matters” t shirt featuring four sets of hands encircling the words ‘Every Child Matters’ against an orange back drop, created by Andy Everson of the K’ómoks First Nation in British Columbia, Canada and that tshirt sparked a conversation about “Lessons Mothers Teach Their Children” that I will never forget.
